Known as the “Lion of Kerala,” Pazhassi Raja led a fierce resistance against the East India Company using forest-based guerrilla warfare. His leadership inspired the tribal Kurichiyas and common people to fight alongside him until his death in battle.
Role: Prime Minister (Dalawa) of Travancore
Legacy: Issued the “Kundara Proclamation” urging revolt
Death Cause: Took his own life at Mannadi Temple (1809)
A bold statesman and fierce nationalist, Velu Thampi led a revolt against the British East India Company while holding the highest office in Travancore. Cornered and betrayed, he chose death over submission.
Role: Outlaw folk hero of Kayamkulam
Legacy: Robbed the rich, helped the poor
Death Cause: Betrayed and died in prison (c. 1859)
A legendary figure in Kerala folklore, Kochunni defied the social injustice of his time. Though labeled a thief, he became a symbol of justice for the oppressed, with stories of his courage surviving in ballads, murals, and local legends.
